Nick Matzorkis on MTV News re: Release of “Pre-Madonna”

"Laugh to Keep from Crying" was the first song ever recorded by Madonna in 1981. Written by Madonna and Stephen Bray. In addition to vocals, Madonna also plays rhythm electric guitar on the track. Unmistakably, Madonna was channeling her idol at the time, Chrissie Hynde. This song was properly licensed from Madonna and originally released on Nick Matzorkis' Harmony Music record label along with her entire collection of recordings prior to her being signed by Sire/Warner Bros. The lyrics of "Laugh to Keep from Crying" provide interesting insight into the mindset of this young Madonna, even offering a slight hint of self-doubt, with overriding intense self-confidence and drive.
